SCHOOL 4 GARDEN CLUB NEWS!

SCHOOL 4 GARDEN IS TAKING SHAPE: We are very proud to announce the creation of our School 4 Garden. Our garden was an idea that developed at one of our Parent/Principal meetings. The idea has taken shape through the winter with the formation of our Garden Club, under the voluntary supervision of Ms. Michelle Rios-Fornes. Our Garden Club currently has sixty student members from 2nd through 6th grade. Parent volunteers will be constructing the garden this weekend lead by Mrs. Stefany Koslow a parent of one of our sixth graders. Our garden will provide an excellent resource for all of our students, K through 6th, to develop hands-on science and nature experiences and knowledge.

WORD MASTERS REPORT

SCHOOL 4 STUDENTS MASTER THE WordMaster CHALLENGE

A student from School 4 representing Fort Lee BOE recently received a perfect score in the second of three meets for this year’s WordMasters Challenge™—a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students annually. Sixth grader Lily Koslow earned a perfect score in the February meet.  Nationally, only 71 sixth graders achieved a perfect score.  Other students at Fort Lee BOE who achieved outstanding results in the meet include sixth grader Bertina Kudrin.  The students were coached in preparation for the WordMasters Challenge™ by Maria Luisa Soria. The WordMasters Challenge™ is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships.  http://www.wordmasterschallenge.com.

The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of relationships. Working to solve the Challenge analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. Though most vocabulary-boosting and analogy-solving activities have been created for high school students, the WordMasters materials have been specifically designed for younger students, in grades three through eight. They are particularly well suited for able and interested children, who rise to the challenge of learning new words and enjoy the logical puzzles posed by analogies.

The WordMasters Challenge has been administered for the past 25 years by a company based in Allendale, New Jersey, which is dedicated to inspiring high achievement in American schools. Now that all three of the year’s meets have been completed, medals and certificates will be awarded to those students who achieved and/or improved the most in the course of the year.

BOOK MEMORIAL FOR ARIFF WAN LATIFF
December 9, 2011

Dear School 4 Family:

Many of you may be aware that a former 2nd grader from School 4, Ariff Wan Latiff, passed away this September from a bacterial infection after the family returned home to Malaysia after many years of residing in Fort Lee. I am sure that all of you join me in praying for and extending our sincere condolences to the Wan Latiff family at this time of great pain and grief.

Ariff attended School No. 4 through the spring of 2011 and was a wonderful student. His brothers Azry and Aiman were also former students of School 4. Because of Ariff’s love of reading, Mr. Byrne, our library media specialist, has compiled a list of titles based on Ariff’s reading log history. We ask that you consider donating one of these books to our school library in honor of Ariff.

We will begin accepting books from the list of titles compiled by Mr. Byrne and place a memorial label in each of the books in honor of Ariff. You can log onto :

for further information on how to contribute books to the School 4 Library.
